Looking at the beginning story of the world in the Oceti Sakowin culture, it brings to view of how they believe things came into being. It started all with Inyan the being that existed before all others but darkness. Due to his loneliness he created Maka (Earth) using his blood. His powers leaked out of his blood as well creating Taku Skanskan which was energy. Because Taku Skanskan held the power he became the all powerful and created Ampetu (light) and Wi (sun). He also brought darkness back in order to give Maka a break from the light and heat. All four great beings Earth, Mountains, Sun, and Sky became the Wakan Tanka. The order of their ranking was due to their importance and level. It started with Wi (sun), Taku Skanskan (sky), Maka(Earth), and Inyah (Mountain).
